Featured Entrepreneur: Somthavy Mathouchan, Owner and Chef, Sugar Bliss Sweets


How did you become an entrepreneur?

I'm a full-time accountant who needed a creative outlet, so in October of 2007 I decided to fulfill my dream of starting my own baking company. Baking has been a passion of mine ever since I managed a sweet shop back in college. Over the years, my
baking experiences have grown, and the yearning to have my own baking business has never ended. I know it sounds corny, but I actually woke up one day and realized that life is too short to not chase after your dreams. Since then, I’ve been thoroughly enjoying being a flavor chemist! I just love working in the kitchen!


What is the nature of your business? What kind of product/service to you provide?

Simply put, I bake with the intent to create a happy atmosphere. I create a variety of desserts from scratch, including cakes, cupcakes, cookies, truffles and bars. What makes Sugar Bliss Sweets special is that we also offer sweets for those with dietary restrictions.

We design treats that will fit your special individual needs while still pleasing your tastebuds. Whether it be gluten, dairy, egg or sugar free,we will handcraft something delicious for everyone.

Why do you love what you do?

Aside from having the opportunity to be creative with flavors, aromas, colors and textures, I am able to help create new memories in customers' lives along with helping them to enjoy sweets with less guilt. My favorite moments are the expressions and gratitude that I get from my customers. It’s such a wonderful challenge to be able to customize an order for someone, especially for the person with food sensitivities. Living with food allergies myself has increased my awareness and fueled my inspiration to create sweets not only for those who enjoy sugar but also for those who cannot have it.

How long have you been in business for yourself?

My coming out party was at the Black & Blue Ball in 2008.



How do you attract clients?

I cater to my clients' needs by building packages to stay within their budget as well as their diets, and I attract clients with some of my unique flavors. I also enjoy networking with my customers through Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Blogspot, Gathering Guide, and Wedding Wire.



Share any information that helps to further describe your business including any publications, awards you have received or shows in which you have participated.

I have dished up sweets for several companies here in Santa Barbara as well as fashion shows in Los Angeles. I have provided desserts for everything from large corporate events and weddings to holiday gatherings and children's birthday parties. Our next event will be at the Nesquik Cupcake Challenge in Los Angeles where we’ll be competing with 18 other bakers and showcasing our original Lavender Vanilla and Rose Petal Cupcakes. We were also recently invited and plan to audition for Food Network’s series, Cupcake Wars!
