Featured Entrepreneur: Katheryn Greenaway, Authorpreneur

How did you become an entrepreneur?

Since childhood, I've been a risk taker and have had a knack for seeing how things could fit together better or a need which has yet to be filled properly. After two and a half years leading a new venture competition, marketing innovative events & classes as a program manager for an entrepreneurship program at the University of California, Santa Barbara, I felt it was time to move ideas out of my head and into the world.

What is the nature of your business? What kind of product/service to you provide?

Currently, I am in the midst of gathering stories from daughters on how their father has influenced their life. From the submissions, I shall create an anthology, offering the collected wisdom as guidance for the dads of tomorrow in raising a daughter. An avid appreciator of words, I have published life style pieces, assisted in editing a paperback on alternative energy and learned book industry tools of the trade while working as a community relations manager for Barnes and Noble. This, coupled with a background in media sales and marketing at ABC, Telemundo and an International advertising agency gives me the know-how to promote this book.

Why do you love what you do?

I love that the project I'm working on involves collaborating with others (contributors range from 51/2 to 69 years old), utilizing their life experiences to create a 'product' designed to make a positive impact. Having the opportunity to develop an idea which springs from your own mind and seeing it come to life is an amazing experience.

How long have you been in business for yourself?

As of this past Summer, I am new to running my own show. Accustomed to wearing many hats at prior jobs, I am confident in my ability to manage this project and have no problem consulting others as a resources for areas in which I need help. I value the knowledge that one cannot know how to do everything, but must take steps in the direction of their dream, learning along the way.

How do you attract clients?

In order to attract authors to participate, I created an electronic call for submissions at www.daughterstory.blogspot.com and then went about finding appropriate places to 'advertise' my idea. By sharing my concept with everyone in my network, as well as with strangers, asking for participation/feedback, collaborating with Girls, Inc. and researching sites which cater to writers I have spread my message and gathered some incredible stories. I can't wait for the book to be published in late Spring of 2010.

Literature has the power to transform the way we see ourselves, the world, & our place in it.*

I invite you to share your story and would love it if you would pass along this request to all the women in your life.

*****Deadline to submit stories is January 15, 2010*****
